Are you ready for the summer?

beach swing summerSummer’s here!

Well not officially since Summer Solstice is June 21st. But you couldn’t tell kids anything differently since school is out.

I have some great memories of summer especially pre-adulthood. Most of those memories are around being shipped to my grandmother’s house in the country. My sister and I would get out of school one day and be in the car to my grandmother’s the next to spend the WHOLE summer.

These are great memories because they include great food including peanut butter and homemade jelly on toast (Yum!), comic books, Barbie dolls, fresh vegetables and fruit (right out of the garden and off the tree), the smell of coffee being made in a perculator, and the stories (The Young & the Restless, Guiding Light, and Another World). The greatest memory? Just being able to be a kid.

Summer camp was fun too. It didn’t matter if it was day or sleep away. That’s where I learned archery which I’m still good at today.

As an adult, summer doesn’t have the same appeal. Sure, I can get happy about not having to slow down in a school zone on my way to work. Day camps are now day spas. And sleep away camp is now a vacation — that’s on my dime.  It’s not the same but it is special.

Summer is truly a magical time of year.

What are some of your favorite summer memories? Share them in the comments below.

By the way, one of my favorite summer camp movies is Meatballs with Bill Murray. I hear this song and it makes me smile. I may watch it this weekend.

  1. Wonderful post!!! That captured the essence of our summers very well. It’s great having a sister/sibling. There are things that we share that are so near and dear to my heart.

I’m pretty sure I wasn’t in Cali with Bonita during those summers. I’m sure those mini Chicks will have great experiences too.

  2. It was great to have a summer vacation. It was a blessing that my children were blessed to share time with grandparents who had knowledge and wisdom and shared it with their grandchildren . Peace, Blessings and much love to those grandparents who gave so much to you and your generation.
