What I would tell my 20 year old self?

Great things are going on at my high school alma mater, Bishop Dunne. The geek (not a bad word just a word that explains my love of technology) in me would have loved to be a student there now. After all the weather Dallas has been getting lately, BD students can keep up with their school work from home. Take a look at this story:

Students Still Getting Work Done Despite Snow Day

It really should have read “days” but it’s ok. Can you believe it? Multiple snow days in Dallas.

After watching this story, I started thinking about me around the time I graduated and how much smarter I am now. Wow! There are truly benefits for getting older. One, you live and learn.

If I had a chance to talk to my 20 year old self, I would tell me this:

  • The grass is NOT greener on the other side.
  • Pay attention to your health, what you eat and exercise. It does make a difference as you get older.
  • Smile, it makes a huge difference in how you feel and your outlook on life.
  • There is no such thing as work/life balance. Work is part of life. They are not equal.
  • Never stop learning.
  • Find something you love, passionate about and do it. Whether it is golf, visiting the spa, travel, or whatever, always make time for fun.
  • Always make time for you.
  • Laugh — it’s good for the body, mind and soul.
  • Never argue with a fool.
  • When you exercise, make it something you enjoy. You are more likely to stick with it.
  • Have a song, a signature song that inspires, motivates or just makes you feel good. (I will share mine below)
  • Remember love is not just a feeling and emotion. It’s also an action.
  • Fear can be a powerful motivator. Let it help you rather than hinder you.
  • Take these words from a poem to heart…People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do.

I’m sure there are some others but these are on my top list.

What are some things you would tell your 20 year old self?

And here’s one of the songs that inspires me: There’s Hope

  1. I would tell myself just this, everything else is perfect: Put every penny into Apple stock and HOLD it through the rough patches until at least 2011. Buy Google at the IPO even though it seems ridiculously high, it’ll go way higher. Oh, and one more thing, don’t hike ON the glacier, you’ll break your knee again, idiot.
